Cleansing your Crystals

Updated: Jun 16

Cleansing crystals using tools like Palo Santo, incense, sage, selenite, moon water, and the moon is a ritual rooted in various spiritual traditions. Each method carries its own historical and cultural significance. Below is a detailed guide on how to use each method along with a brief overview of its origins.

1. Sage (Smudging)

History:

Used by Indigenous tribes of North America, particularly by the Lakota, Navajo, and other Plains tribes.

Considered a sacred practice for purifying people, objects, and spaces.

Smudging ceremonies are deeply spiritual and should be approached with respect and cultural awareness.

How to Use:

Light the tip of a sage bundle until it smoulders.

Blow out the flame and let the smoke waft.

Pass your crystals through the smoke for 30 seconds to a minute.

Set the intention to cleanse negative energy.

2. Palo Santo

History:

Originates from South America, especially Peru and Ecuador.

Used by Indigenous shamans and healers for spiritual purification and energy cleansing.

The name means "holy wood" in Spanish.

Ethically-sourced Palo Santo should come from naturally fallen branches, as the tree is protected in many regions.

How to Use:

Light a stick of Palo Santo wood until it burns for 30 seconds.

Blow it out to produce smoke.

Wave the smoke around your crystals while holding a cleansing intention.

3. Incense

History:

Used in ancient Egypt, India, China, and the Middle East.

In Hinduism and Buddhism, incense is burned as an offering and to sanctify spaces.

Often associated with prayer, meditation, and sacred rituals.

How to Use:

Light incense (frankincense, sandalwood, or myrrh are common).

Let the smoke envelop your crystals.

Focus on the smoke carrying away stagnant or negative energy.

4. Selenite

History:

Named after Selene, the Greek goddess of the moon.

Selenite has long been associated with purity, spiritual growth, and light.

Used in metaphysical practices to promote clarity and high vibrations.

How to Use:

Place your crystals on or next to a selenite plate or wand.

Leave them there for several hours or overnight.

Selenite itself does not need cleansing and is believed to recharge other stones.

5. Moon (Moonlight Cleansing)

History:

The moon has been worshiped in many cultures (e.g., Greek, Roman, Celtic, and Indigenous traditions).

Full moons are associated with release, cleansing, and energy culmination.

Modern practitioners use the moon for energy work and alignment.

How to Use:

Place your crystals outside or on a windowsill under the full moon.

Leave them overnight to absorb lunar energy.

Retrieve them in the morning before sunlight if your crystals are sensitive to light (e.g., amethyst, rose quartz).

6. Moon Water

History:

Rooted in folk traditions and lunar worship.

Associated with witchcraft, astrology, and earth-based spiritual practices.

Water charged by moonlight is believed to amplify spiritual intentions and emotional healing.

How to Use:

Create moon water by leaving a jar of water under the full moon overnight (optional: add crystals that are water-safe).

Use the water to gently rinse or spray your crystals.

Set intentions for renewal and clarity.

⚠️ Caution: Not all crystals are water-safe (e.g., selenite, malachite, pyrite can dissolve or be damaged by water).

Combining Methods

Many people combine methods—e.g., moonlight + selenite, or sage + moon water—for a more potent ritual. Always handle sacred materials with intention and respect, especially those tied to Indigenous or cultural traditions.
